Sustainable Manufacturing

From the 14 manufacturing sites we have across the UK we manufacture a wide range of brands including many household favourites such as Nescafé, Kit Kat, Carnation, Shredded Wheat, Buxton Water and Bakers Dog Food.

Our York site is one of the world’s largest confectionery manufacturing plants and makes over a billion Kit Kats and 183 million Aero bars a year.

We recognise that manufacturing and other areas of our business have an impact on the environment and the people who source, produce and consume our products, which is why we have established short and long-term priorities for our Nestlé operations in the UK and Ireland as a whole.

NPTC Confectionery

The Nestlé Product Technology Centre (NPTC) in York is part of Nestlé's global network of Research Centres. The NPTC in York is Nestlé’s centre of excellence for chocolate, sugar confectionery and biscuits focusing on lighter eating, luxury gifting and popularly positioned products (PPP).

The NPTC York is responsible for developing new technologies and innovative products, as well as providing help and technical assistance to Nestlé operating companies around the world. The PTC currently employs 150-200 people including engineers, technologists, confectioners, technicians, nutritionists made up of over 30 nationalities.

The heart of the NPTC is the Pilot Plant, a miniature factory which simulates manufacturing processes on a smaller scale. Here we can look at the development of new equipment and technologies and of new or reformulated products, as well as training and education of global Nestlé confectionery staff.

New developments and modifications of existing products are created in the development laboratory and confectionery kitchen. These products, designed to delight our consumers, are tasted and evaluated by trained sensory panels.

The work at York NPTC is essential for the continuous improvement of quality, nutritional profile, sustainability and affordability so our consumers continue to enjoy their Nestlé products.
